How to Prepare for a Professional Massage

A. Understand Your Needs

Before booking your appointment for a professional massage, take some time to consider what you are looking to gain from your massage. Ask yourself; Am I looking to relieve stress, alleviate pain, or simply relax? Communicating your goals to your massage therapist will help them tailor the session to your needs.

B. Choose the Right Therapist

Not all massage therapists are the same. Research local therapists and read reviews to find someone who specializes in the type of massage you need. Whether it’s deep tissue, Swedish, or sports massage, finding the right fit can make a huge difference in your experience.

C.  Your Body

Shower prior to arrival.  Having offensive Body odor will make the treatment less enjoyable for the therapist.

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that you can easily take off and put on.  If you are more comfortable keeping your clothes on during the massage, your choice of garments should allow access to the areas that your therapist is working on.  Note – Different modalities will be enhanced by what you do or do not wear.

Wear minimal jewelry.  The less the better.  Depending on the modality you are receiving, the jewelry may or may not get in the way.  You may be asked to remove your jewelry and you will need to secure it somewhere safe so as not to forget it, or lose it.  Many therapists offer an area for your effects.

Note for Men – Trim excessively hairy areas with trimmers. Why?  Even though most therapists are trained to make adjustments so as not to pull your hair, here’s the deal; more hair = the need to use more lotion/ oil/ cream/ gel; more lubricant = less drag on the tissues and less impact on tissue; more hair = less contact with skin and less impact on what’s below the skin… the fascia, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  Excessively rubbing lotion into body hair can feel very uncomfortable due to the friction it creates.

Note for Women – If you prefer keeping undergarments on during the massage, wear an upper body undergarment  that has the option to create access to the back.  Example: tube top that can slide down or  a bra / sports bar  that can be unclasped by the therapist with your permission.

Preparing for Your Massage Session

A. Hydrate Well

Drink plenty of water before and after your massage. Staying hydrated helps your muscles recover and reduces the likelihood of soreness.

B. Avoid Heavy Meals

Eating a large meal right before your massage can leave you feeling uncomfortable. Opt for a light snack if you’re hungry but avoid anything too heavy.

During Your Massage

A. Communicate with Your Therapist

Don’t be afraid to speak up during your massage. If something feels uncomfortable or you prefer more or less pressure, let your therapist know. They’re there to help you, and clear communication ensures you get the most out of your session.

B. Breathe Deeply

Focus on your breathing throughout the massage. Deep, steady breaths can help you relax more deeply and allow the therapist to work more effectively on your muscles.

Post-Massage Tips

A. Take Your Time Getting Up

After your massage, don’t rush to get up. Give yourself a few moments to enjoy the relaxation and allow your body to adjust. Slowly sit up and take a few deep breaths before standing.

B. Continue Hydrating

Just as it’s important to hydrate before your massage, it’s crucial to drink water afterward. This helps flush out toxins released from your muscles during the massage.

C. Rest and Relax

Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day. Your body needs time to process the massage and heal. Avoid strenuous activities and enjoy the feeling of relaxation.

D. Stretch Lightly

Gentle stretching after your massage can help maintain the benefits and reduce any muscle stiffness. Focus on the areas that were worked on the most during your session.

 Maximizing Long-Term Benefits

A. Schedule Regular Sessions

Consistency is key when it comes to massage therapy. Regular sessions can help maintain your physical and mental well-being. Discuss with your therapist how often you should come in based on your specific needs.

B. Combine with Other Wellness Practices

Integrating massage with other wellness activities like yoga, meditation, and proper nutrition can enhance its benefits. A holistic approach to health can improve your overall quality of life.

By following these tips, you can ensure that you get the most out of your professional massage. From preparing properly to post-massage care, every step contributes to a more beneficial and enjoyable experience. Happy relaxing!
